His boss, Marlboro County Sheriff Charles Lemon, along with Cook, were both indicted by a grand jury in January 2024. Both men initially pleaded guilty. But exactly one week after the indictment, Cook was aiming to make a deal with prosecutors to avoid the maximum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine.
