Illinois health officials released a warning Monday as whooping cough cases in the state rose to their highest levels in two decades. According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, October alone saw 408 cases of whooping cough, also known as pertussis, marking the “largest monthly total in 20 years.” The number is more than double the number of cases reported in October 2023, health officials noted. Preliminary data showed the state has recorded more than 1,900 confirmed and probable cases of whooping cough so far this year, the highest number since 2012.
