Fewer NC attorneys signing up to represent people who need public defenders
NORTH CAROLINA (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- Just a few months ago, the North Carolina Office of Indigent Defense Services (or IDS) sent out a memo to attorneys informing them of the potential for a statewide funding shortfall. The organization connects people who need a public defender with private attorneys outside the public defender's office.“We've always relied on a healthy roster of lawyers to take those clients' cases on, and that list has been dwindling,” said Mecklenburg County Chief Public Defender, Kevin Tully.Tully says ten years ago, they had roughly 115 lawyers on the general misdemeanor list to take on cases his department couldn't handle. That list now only has 11 attorneys on it.
