Team USA faced off against South Sudan in an intense basketball game that ended with a score of 101-100. The game was part of the USA Basketball Showcase, where the American team was preparing for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. This matchup was highly anticipated as both teams were eager to test their skills against each other.
The game started off with Team USA taking an early lead, showcasing their superior athleticism and skill. However, South Sudan quickly caught up and the two teams engaged in a back-and-forth battle for the lead throughout the entire game. Both teams displayed impressive teamwork and determination on the court, making it an exciting and competitive match for all spectators.
Team USA will next play Germany on Monday before taking off for France.
The U.S. has already defeated other Olympic teams in preparation for Paris. Last week, the team beat Serbia and Australia in two games held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Those games followed a win over Canada in Las Vegas on July 10.
At the Olympics, Team USA will play three Group C games in Lille: on July 28 (Serbia), July 31 (South Sudan) and Aug. 3 (Puerto Rico). The knockout rounds then shift to Paris with the quarterfinals (Aug. 6), semifinals (Aug. 8) and gold medal game (Aug. 10) at Accor Arena.
Down by 16 at one point, the Americans dug out of that hole with an 18-0 run in the second half — then needed heroics at the end anyway. JT Thor’s 3-pointer with 20 seconds left gave South Sudan a 100-99 lead, then the Americans called timeout and put the ball in James’ hands.
South Sudan used Saturday's game to serve notice that they're capable of worrying any team at these Olympics, and these two teams will meet again in Group C in just under two weeks.
LeBron James had the ball on the last possession and scored a tough layup to put Team USA ahead (101-100). After South Sudan's timeout, Carlik Jones had a chance to win the game but missed a floater, and Team USA escaped with a narrow one-point win.
Team USA will play against World Champions Germany on Monday, July 22nd, while it was South Sudan's last game before the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
