USWNTs victory against Mexico demonstrates progress ahead of the Olympics.

The recent victory of the US Women's National Team (USWNT) against Mexico in a friendly match has demonstrated significant progress and potential ahead of the upcoming Olympics. The 4-0 win showcased the team's strength, skill, and cohesion on the field, providing a glimpse into what they are capable of achieving in Tokyo. This victory serves as a testament to the hard work and dedication of both the players and coaching staff, as they continue to refine their tactics and improve their performance.

One key aspect of the USWNT's success against Mexico was their ability to control possession and dictate the pace of play throughout the match. Their strong midfield play and quick transitions from defense to offense allowed them to create numerous scoring opportunities and ultimately secure a convincing win. This level of dominance on the field reflects the team's commitment to excellence and their determination to succeed at all costs.

The victory comes less than five months after Mexico's historic 2-0 victory over the USWNT in the group stage of the Concacaf W Gold Cup, the Americans' first loss to Mexico on home soil.

Saturday was a more measured game that saw the USWNT retain 70% of the possession and keep Mexico from finding the counterattacking opportunities that allowed the visitors to thrive at the Gold Cup.

Captain Lindsey Horan moved higher up in the midfield in the second half after playing next to Sam Coffey in a double pivot in the first half, and the USWNT found success immediately. Two minutes into the second half, Swanson put a shot just wide of frame on a feed from Smith. Five minutes later, Smith got on the receiving end of a direct ball over the top from Horan.

Finishing has been a longstanding issue for the USWNT, with the squad only scoring four goals in four games during their ill-fated 2023 World Cup run. Hayes and her team hope some fine tuning and more time together will remedy any lingering scoring woes. After all, Saturday’s match was the first outing since Hayes announced her Olympic roster, and came amid only her second camp with the USWNT.

Lynn Williams came into the match in the 75th minute. Williams was originally one of four alternates to the 18-player U.S. Olympic roster, but forward Catarina Macario is unable to play in France because of knee irritation. Hayes announced on Friday that Williams would be replacing Macario.
