Renowned artist Alex Janvier, a member of the Indian Group of Seven, passes away at the age of 89

It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of renowned artist Alex Janvier, a member of the Indian Group of Seven, at the age of 89. Janvier was a pioneer in Indigenous art and his work has left an indelible mark on the Canadian art scene.

Janvier's unique style combined traditional Indigenous motifs with modern abstract techniques, creating vibrant and dynamic pieces that captured the spirit of his culture. His use of bold colors and geometric shapes reflected his deep connection to his Indigenous heritage and served as a powerful statement on cultural identity and resilience.

The Alex Janvier Gallery on CLFN continues to be visited regularly and showcases many of his great pieces.

His work has inspired countless artists and painters and been recognized in a variety of ways, including being a member of the Order of Canada and received the Alberta Order of Excellence and Governor General’s Award for Visual and Media Arts.

The Leo Martinez Project provides the music, and, as a cultural footnote, this is the first time ever you can buy cannabis at an Edmonton festival, here in the form of Papa’s Herb disposable vapes to boost up the jokes.

Member of the Order of Canada and the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts, Mr. Janvier was celebrated and honoured on many occasions. He received in 2002 a National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award, a Governor General's Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2008, and a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013, among many other honours.

The Canadian Museum of History offers its most sincere condolences to Mr. Janvier's family and friends.

In 2003, Janvier and members of his family opened the Janvier Gallery in Cold Lake, not far from where he was born. Visitors could sometimes meet the artist fresh from the studio, covered in paint-splattered jeans and happy to sit and chat.

He painted into his last days, keeping his fingers nimble by assembling jigsaw puzzles at night.

During his distinguished career, Janvier was honored with accolades such as the Order of Canada and the Governor General's Award for Visual and Media Arts. His impact reached beyond Canada, with international art exhibitions and influence on artists worldwide.

Alex Janvier’s lasting legacy will motivate upcoming artists and highlight art's role in connecting cultures and upholding heritage. His significant contributions to Indigenous art will always be revered, valued, and commemorated.
