Charlotte FC suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Inter Miami in a highly anticipated match that saw Lionel Messi absent from the lineup. The loss marked a setback for Charlotte FC, as they were unable to secure a victory against their opponents despite putting up a strong fight throughout the game.
The absence of Messi certainly played a role in Inter Miami's victory, as his presence on the field often proves to be a game-changer for his team. Without him, Charlotte FC had an opportunity to capitalize on their opponent's weakened lineup but ultimately fell short in their efforts.
Agyemang’s goal tied the match at 1 at the 41-minute mark. It was assisted by Jere Uronen.
Charlotte had twice as many shots as the visitors — 14 to 7 — but dropped to 9-8-5 on the season and sit in sixth place in the East.
Miami got first got on the board with a goal from Serhiy Kryvtsov 21 minutes into the match. The win pushed their streak to four straight.
With the final stoppage time winding down, Agyemang landed a red card to be ejected. His yellow card also came in stoppage time at the end of the first half.
The match kicked off with few opportunities in attack for the visitors in the initial stages. It was Inter Miami, however, that struck first to open the scoring in the 30th minute through Taylor. A fantastic team play finished off with Cremaschi finding Alba inside the box on the left side of the pitch, who subsequently laid a ball for Taylor at the center of the box. The Finnish winger then tidily sent the ball to the back of the net to give Inter Miami the lead. The goal was Taylor’s fourth this regular season and his fifth across all competitions in 2024, while the assist was the sixth for Alba this regular and seventh across all competitions, and the secondary assist took Cremaschi’s tally to three this season.
Charlotte (9-8-5) pulled even in the 41st minute when Patrick Agyemang used second-year defender Jere Uronen’s fifth assist of the season and career to score his sixth goal. Agyemang had one goal in one start and 12 appearances last season, his first.
Charlotte FC sits sixth in the 15-team Eastern Conference — still better than the team has ever done before, but still not good enough. The good news, especially for an otherwise barren Charlotte pro sports landscape: This looks like a playoff team, and one that might do a little damage in the postseason.
But for that to happen, Charlotte FC — either externally or internally — has to find some more goal-scoring.
