Sixers sign Andre Drummond to two-year deal , $10M deal

The Philadelphia 76ers have made a significant move in signing Andre Drummond to a two-year, $10 million deal. This acquisition adds depth to their frontcourt and provides them with a solid backup center behind Joel Embiid. Drummond brings a wealth of experience and skills to the team, having been an NBA All-Star multiple times in his career.

Drummond's rebounding ability is particularly impressive, as he has led the league in rebounds per game multiple times. His presence on the court will help the Sixers secure more possessions and limit second-chance opportunities for their opponents. Additionally, Drummond's defensive prowess will be valuable in protecting the rim and anchoring the team's defense.

That means Drummond's in line for a second stint as Joel Embiid's backup. The first ended at the 2022 trade deadline when the Sixers included Drummond as part of their package to acquire James Harden from the Nets. Over 49 games as a Sixer, Drummond averaged 6.1 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists.

The 30-year-old big man enjoyed his first run in Philadelphia and sounded quite open to returning in January of 2023.

“I think just how much of a family this organization is,” Drummond said. “They welcomed me. They made me feel very comfortable when I got here. We just had a lot of fun as a team. We really cared about each other.

Changes to league rules this year allowed for such agreements to be in place before the 6 p.m. Eastern time start to free agency on Sunday; teams, in most cases, were allowed to speak to their own free agents or extension-eligible players once the NBA Finals were completed.

Harden, a 10-time NBA All-Star, averaged 16.6 points and 8.5 assists last season for the Clippers, who will move into their new Intuit Dome home when this coming season starts. Harden's status was one of the big questions facing the Clippers this summer; the other surrounds nine-time All-Star Paul George, who did not take his $48.8 million option for this season and is now a free agent — with Philadelphia perhaps the frontrunner to land him if he indeed does leave the Clippers.

In 2022, the big man signed a two-year, $6.6 million contract with the Chicago Bulls, who added him to provide depth behind starter Nikola Vučević. Drummond averaged 6.0 points on 60.6 percent shooting and 6.6 rebounds in 12.7 minutes per contest in 67 games off the bench in 2022-23.

He fared even better in 2023-24, and now Drummond is about to embark on his second stint in Philadelphia, which has added more quality frontcourt depth and adept rebounding behind star big man Joel Embiid off the bench.
