The world of hip-hop is mourning the loss of a true legend, as New York hip-hop icon DJ Mister Cee has passed away at the age of 57. Known for his incredible talent behind the turntables and his influential work as a radio personality, Mister Cee was a pioneer in the hip-hop community.
Throughout his career, Mister Cee worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, including The Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, and Big Daddy Kane. His contributions to the genre were immeasurable, and his impact on the culture will never be forgotten.
Mister Cee's "Throwback at Noon" show on Hot97 was one of the most popular programs at its time. More recently, he was on Audacy's "94.7 The Block."
"He was on the airwaves for Hot97, shaping and molding the culture," said Chuck Creekmur, CEO of AllHipHop.com.
Mister Cee, whose head-bopping mixes reverberated on New York radio for decades, was a hit D.J. on New York City’s Hot 97 for more than 20 years before leaving the station in 2014. He was the executive producer of the Notorious B.I.G.’s debut album, “Ready to Die.”
Born Calvin Lebrun in August 1966 in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood, Mister Cee grew up at his grandparents’ home and took to the turntables under the mentorship of an uncle who was a D.J., he told Rock The Bells, a satellite radio show, in November.
Over the years, the DJ icon was also an influential radio personality, working for Hot 97, RADIO 103.9, and Rock the Bells Radio. On his Rock the Bells Radio show, “The Set It Off Show,” Mister Cee mixed classic & timeless hip-hop songs from the ’80s, ’90s, and ’2000s every Monday-Thursday from 10pm-12am ET on channel 43.
Peter Rosenberg, who is co-host of a weekday morning show at HOT 97 and ESPN Radio's 'The Michael Kay Show,' also reacted to the news of LeBrun's death.
Mister Cee's passing is a devastating loss for the hip-hop community, but his legacy will live on through his music and influence. He will always be remembered as a true icon in New York City's vibrant hip-hop scene. Rest in peace, DJ Mister Cee.
