Ranking the favorites, contenders and hopefuls in Masters 2024

As the prestigious Masters tournament approaches in 2024, golf fans and experts alike are buzzing with excitement and anticipation. The field is stacked with talent, making it difficult to predict who will come out on top.

At the top of the list of favorites is defending champion, Jordan Spieth. His mastery of Augusta National and recent form make him a strong contender for another green jacket. Following closely behind are Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas, both proven winners with the skills to dominate at Augusta.

Scottie Scheffler recently added a second PLAYERS Championship to his resume. Can the defending champ do the same at the Masters? He is the unquestioned No. 1 player in the world right now, but he will have plenty of challengers.

Unlike the PGA Championship, U.S. Open and The Open, the Masters returns to the same venue each year. While there are some small tweaks to the course here and there, the core of Augusta National has stood the test of time with those who have solved the riddle once before generally having the answers year after year.

The conditions — always pristine, because everything is at Augusta National — is as good as players can remember. There is rain in the forecast for the opening round, but otherwise players are faced with what could be the two “F” words that take on different meanings to different games — firm and fast.

“The course is very firm,” Xander Schauffele said. “It’s probably some of the best shape I’ve seen in previous years, to be honest. I don’t know how the weather has been, but it’s a shame that it might rain at some point this week because it’s looking like a really hard, really firm.

Woods has only played one full round on the PGA Tour in 2024, at the Genesis Invitational in Los Angeles. He had to withdraw in the second round due to flu-like symptoms.

Longtime friend and college teammate Notah Begay also openly discussed Woods' health recently after the two spoke at the junior tournament Begay sponsors, and in which Woods' son, Charlie, participated.

“Touch on the greens, around the greens has always been a strength,” Malnati continued, “and that's something you need here. I think the course suits the game absolutely, like, perfectly. It's my first Masters. Rookies historically don't do awesome here. I go into it with – I go into it expecting to do my best and expecting that to give me a chance.”

Overly optimistic? Maybe not. When it comes to the Masters, Malnati has never lost even once. Heck, he hasn’t even made a bogey.
