On a chilly autumn afternoon, the Iowa Hawkeyes faced off against the Penn State Nittany Lions in a highly anticipated college football matchup. The Hawkeyes, known for their strong defense and gritty play, were hoping to secure a victory on their home turf. However, it was the Nittany Lions who came out swinging, dominating from the opening kickoff.
Penn State's offense was firing on all cylinders, with quarterback Sean Clifford leading the charge with pinpoint accuracy and smart decision-making. The Hawkeyes' defense struggled to contain the explosive Penn State attack, giving up big plays and crucial third-down conversions.
Marshall — and fellow perimeter-mate Taylor McCabe — made a rare cold shooting night by Caitlin Clark a minor inconvenience, and No. 3 Iowa blistered Penn State, 95-62, in a Big Ten women’s basketball tournament quarterfinal Friday evening at Target Center.
“The biggest thing is being confident in myself and just playing free out there,” said Marshall, who hit 4 of 7 long-range attempts for the third straight game.
“I think, when you miss some shots and kind of get into a little bit of a slump, you can become tense, and I feel like that's kind of what my problem was.
“I told myself, just play free, have fun, enjoy every little moment on the court, whether it's picking up my teammate or cheering for my teammate or getting an open shot for my teammate.”
Clark led the Hawkeyes (27-4) with 24 points, and registered 10 rebounds and seven assists. But the reigning national player of the year was 5 of 19 from the field, 2 of 14 from long range.
Iowa has come out somewhat lackadaisical and sloppy in the second quarter, allowing Penn State to start the frame on a 6-0 run while the Hawkeyes shot 0-for-5.
Still, the Lady Lions missed some prime opportunities to trim their deficit even further.
Clark still hasn't made a field goal on five shot attempts. With her team building a big early lead, she's appeared less aggressive than usual.
Despite their best efforts, Iowa could not find a way to stop the Nittany Lions' momentum. In the end, Penn State emerged victorious with a commanding 31-0 shutout win over Iowa.
The defeat was a tough pill to swallow for the Hawkeyes and their loyal fans, but they vowed to bounce back stronger in their next game.
