Marcus Tsohonis scored 28 points and Long Beach State outlasted Southern California 84-79 in overtime on Sunday, spoiling Bronny James' college debut for the Trojans.
Just months after a suffering a cardiac arrest, the highly touted freshman guard made his USC Trojans debut against Long Beach State at the Galen Center in Los Angeles on Sunday.
Coming off the bench, James was met with a standing ovation from the sold-out home crowd when he checked into the game for the first time seven minutes into the contest.
Bronny James stepped onto the hardwood for the first time as a college basketball player on Sunday, with his father, LeBron James, watching from the stands. James' debut came less than five months after he suffered a cardiac arrest during a practice in July.
James' team, the University of Southern California Trojans, lost Sunday's game to the visiting Long Beach State, 84-79, CBS Sports reported.
James, 19, announced he was joining USC in May, but his cardiac arrest required months of recovery. After being treated at Cedars-Sinai hospital in Los Angeles, James was sent home to rest, according to his cardiologist. He was later found to have a congenital heart defect.
In a post-game press conference, Bronny thanked medical professionals, coaches, teammates and his family for helping him amid his journey back to the basketball court.
"I just want to give appreciation to everyone who has helped me through this," he said, according to a video shared online by NBA reporter Malika Andrews.
Bronny graduated from high school and committed to the USC men’s basketball program in May, but he later spent two days in the hospital after experiencing a cardiac arrest at practice in July.
The teenager was fully cleared to return to his athletics late last month, and he rejoined his Trojans teammates to practice earlier this week.
A five-star recruit and McDonald's All-American, James came in at No. 22 on 247Sports' composite rankings for the 2023 class. He's projected as a potential first-round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.
James and the 5-4 Trojans will look to get back on track when they hit the road to face Auburn on Sunday, Dec. 17.
