Trailing by three points from the Baltimore Ravens' 18-yard line with 16 seconds remaining in regulation, the Los Angeles Rams had to take a timeout because quarterback Matthew Stafford couldn't hear the playcall in the headset.
Rams head coach Sean McVay said "there were some issues with the headsets" on Sunday, but Stafford later clarified that it's not that the headset went out -- he just couldn't hear the call.
The Ravens (10-3) responded with a 21-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Lamar Jackson to wide receiver Zay Flowers, who also caught the ensuing 2-point attempt to give the Ravens a 31-28 lead with 1:16 remaining.
Highlighted by a 19-yard completion to Robinson and 34-yard completion to wide receiver Cooper Kupp, Stafford on the ensuing drive marched the Rams to the Ravens 18-yard line with 22 seconds left. Helped by Robinson breaking up a near-pick by Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey in the endzone, the Rams were able to settle for a 36-yard field goal by Lucas Havrisik with 7 seconds left to force overtime.
The Rams threw unsuccessfully to the end zone on their next play and kicked a field goal to force overtime. The Ravens won, 37-31 in overtime on a walk-off punt return touchdown. The wasted timeout baffled viewers. Why weren't the Rams ready to line up?
McVay first blamed the incident on "issues with the headsets" during his communication with Stafford.
Since Week 9, Beckham has totaled 17 catches for 343 yards and three touchdowns on 31 targets. He wore a sweatshirt dedicated to his former teammates during pregame warm-ups and his Super Bowl ring on a necklace after the game.
Despite the loss, McVay said he loved "the way that our group competed" and that there were "a lot of great plays made, a lot of resilience, a lot of grit, a lot of guts shown by this team today."
"We're going to respond," McVay said. "And it's OK to hurt right now. That was a gut-wrenching loss. Guys put a lot out there, but we're not going to let the Ravens beat us twice. I can promise you that."
