Forty percent of Americans say they are afraid to walk alone at night within a mile of their home, the highest number in three decades, a new poll found. The last time this many Americans were concerned about crime was in 1993, during “one of the worst crime waves in U.S. history,” Gallup, who conducted the poll, reported. Since then, the number of Americans who are worried about walking alone at night hovered around 35 percent.
