Aaron Rodgers has hinted all season that he'll make a historically quick recovery from a Week 1 Achilles tear, and the Jets quarterback went a step further on Sunday, telling NBC he's targeting a mid-December return.
CBS Sports HQ injury expert Marty Jaramillo, who estimated earlier this season that Rodgers is, in fact, on track for a historic recovery, told CBS Sports HQ on Sunday night that he see no reason why the four-time MVP can't return by mid-December.
His expedited steps to walking and throwing without crutches, along with the relatively new "speed bridge" procedure performed during his surgery, suggested Rodgers could be back under center as early as Dec. 17, when the Jets visit the Dolphins in Week 15. But Rodgers has played both sides while addressing his rehab on "The Pat McAfee Show," repeatedly insisting he is ahead of schedule while downplaying the certainty of his availability in the coming weeks.
The Jets defense would also appear to have the statistical edge, coming in this week at ninth in total yards allowed/game and third in net pass yards allowed. And the sackers — Quinnen Williams, John Franklin-Myers, Bryce Huff, Jermaine Johnson, Quinton Jefferson and the rest of the front — will want to team up with Saice Gardner, D.J. Reed, Jordan Whitehead and the cover team to coax multiple sacks and turnovers out of rookie QB Aidan O'Connell, filling in for a third time for veteran QB Jimmy Garoppolo.
Jacobs ended a 14-game streak of failing to gain 100 yards, getting 27 attempts as Pierce committed to a run-first attack, but his fumble late in the fourth quarter gave the Jets (4-5) a chance.
O'Connell became the second Raiders rookie quarterback to win two of his first three starts -- Mike Rae in 1976 was the other -- by passing for 153 yards with one interception.
It was 9-9, with each team having made three field goals, when O'Connell scrambled and found Mayer in the end zone early in the fourth quarter. Las Vegas' defense took care of the rest.
The Jets, who made life miserable for more than a half for their only other rookie QB opponent, the Giants' Tommy DeVito, would like to do the same to the fourth-round rookie QB out of Purdue. O'Connell does have the formidable talents of veteran stars Davante Adams at WR and Josh Jacobs at RB.
