Texas vs. Kansas State, Texas win 33-30 in overtime

Major contenders for the Big 12 title collide in a key conference showdown when the No. 7 Texas Longhorns host the No. 23 Kansas State Wildcats on Saturday at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin. The Longhorns (7-1, 4-1 in Big 12) and Wildcats (6-2, 4-1) enter Saturday in a five-way tie for first in the Big 12 standings with Oklahoma (7-1, 4-1), Iowa State (5-3, 4-1) and Oklahoma State (6-2, 4-1). The top two teams after the regular season will qualify for the Big 12 Championship Game on Dec. 2 in Arlington, Texas. Texas is expected to start Maalik Murphy at quarterback with Quinn Ewers dealing with a shoulder injury.

After holding a comfortable 27-7 lead late in the third quarter, Texas found themselves in a thriller as Kansas State stormed back to tie the game at 30-30 and force overtime. Bert Auburn kicked a game-winning 42-yard field goal in the first overtime period and the Texas defense got a fourth down stop to secure the win.

The kick gave Texas a 30-27 lead with 6:03 to play, and it looked like it may prove to be the eventual winner when Kansas State's Tennant hooked a 27-yard chip shot with 1:45 to go. However, Kansas State quickly got the ball back and was able to get the game into overtime when Tennant got his redemption from 45 yards.

Texas was on the ropes in overtime, but the defense made the big play when it mattered. Klieman's fourth-down decision will be questioned as the Wildcats were well in position to send the game to double-overtime. But the Wildcats wanted the chance to pull off the upset right there.

Texas did better on its own 3rd and 3 with Brooks looking slippery on a 27-yard run into opposing territory before the drive stalled on a run stuff, an incompletion, and a throw to Worthy short of the chains. From 49 yards, junior kicker Bert Auburn tied his career long to extend the lead.

Kansas State won the toss, giving Texas to ball to start overtime, which started with Murphy throwing an incompletion on a run-pass option. When Brooks only gained one yard on second down, the Longhorns faced a 3rd and 9, another incompletion from Murphy. To save the drive and possibly the game, Auburn connected from 42 yards.

Immediately looking dangerous, Howard hit tight end Ben Sinnott over the middle for a 19-yard gain on first down. Texas stopped Howard on a run on first down, then deflected a pop pass on second down, and forced an incompletion on third down before Klieman kept his offense on the field for fourth down. Sarkisian called a timeout and the Longhorns forced an incompletion by Howard, who couldn’t find an open receiver on the game’s final play as Texas pulled out the win.
