At 7:45 p.m. Saturday, Washington sophomore Grady Gross slipped mid-swing on the opening kickoff, sending a football comically bouncing across the field.
That slip served as a satisfactory spoiler.
In No. 5 Washington’s 15-7 win over Arizona State, the blunders were abundant.
But the Sun Devils’ biggest blunder turned the tide.
Leading 7-6 with 8:26 left, Arizona State coach Kenny Dillingham inexplicably opted to go for it on fourth-and-3 from the Husky 12-yard-line, instead of extending the advantage with a 29-yard field goal. Quarterback Trenton Bourguet promptly took a shotgun snap, looked right and ripped a pass that UW junior “husky” nickel Mishael Powell jumped — sprinting down the left sideline for an 89-yard pick-six.
The ASU football team's upset attempt of No. 5 Washington came up just short in a 15-7 loss to the Huskies at Husky Stadium on Saturday night.
With the Sun Devils leading 7-6 in the fourth quarter, Trenton Bourguet's fourth-and-3 pass at the Washington 12 was intercepted by Mishael Powell, who ran the ball all the way back for a touchdown to give Washington a 12-7 lead with 8:11 remaining.
The Huskies later added a field goal for the game's final points.
Washington improved to 7-0 with the win.
Bourguet threw for 196 yards with completions to eight different receivers. Elijah Badger was his favorite target, with eight grabs for 50 yards. The Sun Devils rushed for 145 yards, with 63 from DeCarlos Brooks and 51 by Cam Skattebo. The Sun Devil defense forced the Huskies' top-three offense into four turnovers and kept them out of the end zone. Washington finished with 288 yards of offense, which is their fewest since the team's final game of the 2021 season. The Huskies' 13 rushing yards are the fewest allowed by an ASU defense since holding Stanford to that same total on October 8, 2021.
Even if they lost, Arizona State's defense still kept up the pressure with five sacks. Leading the way was Prince Dorbah and his 2.5 sacks.
Washington's victory was their 11th straight at home (dating back to last season), bumping their overall record up to 6-0. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 45.2 points per game. As for Arizona State, their loss dropped their record down to 1-5.
As mentioned, Washington is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 26 points. This contest will be their seventh straight as the favorites (so far over this stretch they are 3-3 against the spread).
