One team will take a big step toward the 2023 AAC Championship Game when the Tulane Green Wave and Memphis Tigers collide in a key AAC showdown on Friday at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium in Memphis. The championship game will pit the top two teams in the AAC standings after the regular season concludes. Entering Friday, both Green Wave, who were the preseason favorites to win the title, and Tigers, who were picked fourth, are 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the AAC and are in a five-way tie for first place in the conference. Both teams are coming off bye weeks.
The Friday night AAC matchup between Memphis (4-2, 1-1 AAC) and Tulane (5-1, 2-0) got heated in the game's final quarter, as Tigers defensive lineman Andres Fox was ejected from the game at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.
Fox received a flagrant personal with less than 10 minutes to play in what was eventually a 31-21 win for Tulane. He was escorted from the field by a Tigers assistant coach as cameras showed his exact infraction against the visiting Green Wave. Fox, a redshirt senior defensive lineman, appeared to punch Tulane offensive lineman Josh Remetich in the groin.
After falling behind 10-0, the Tigers stormed back, scoring the game's next 21 points to take a 21-10 lead. The Green Wave responded, however, posting 21-straight points of their own to take the win. The Memphis Tigers will head to Birmingham, Ala. to reignite the Battle for the Bones rivalry with UAB on Saturday, Oct. 14 at Protective Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN2. Single-game tickets for the 2023 Memphis Football season are available at GoTigersGo.com. Additionally, fans can also utilize a new ticket offering this season, allowing fans the choice of how to customize their gamedays at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.
The Green Wave bounced back from a 20-7 deficit at home on Sept. 30 to win their AAC opener over UAB by a 35-23 count. Makhi Hughes scored his second touchdown of the day early in the third quarter to push Tulane to a 21-20 lead. Devean Deal had four tackles for loss, including a sack, and Hughes ran for 123 yards. Michael Pratt threw two touchdown passes in the win.
