Saints quarterback Derek Carr went to a local hospital Sunday to be evaluated after injuring his right shoulder in the third quarter of New Orleans' 18-17 loss to the Packers, according to coach Dennis Allen.
''They're doing an evaluation, I think it's X-rays," Allen said after the game. "I can't tell you really any more than that. When we know what it is, we'll let you know."
Carr flew home with the team.
Carr's injury marks the fifth consecutive season that the Saints have injuries at quarterback. Drew Brees missed nine games between 2019 and 2020, and Jameis Winston missed most of the 2021 season with a torn ACL before injuring his back and foot in the 2022 season.
Love's teammates said he maintained his composure even when the Packers were scoreless heading into the final period.
“If you look at the cameras, just watching him in the huddle, pre-snap or what not, his poise is amazing,” Doubs said. “And that’s one trait that I continue to emphasize on him because any other quarterback in that situation would lose his mind.”
Carr’s backup, Jameis Winston, threw a couple of completions to Chris Olave that drove the Saints (2-1) into scoring position before Blake Grupe’s 46-yard field-goal attempt sailed wide right with 1:05 left. It was the first career miss in seven attempts for Grupe, a rookie who played in college at Arkansas State and Notre Dame.
Green Bay improves to 2-1 with the victory and has another home game in four days, vs. division rival Detroit, who's also 2-1. New Orleans falls to 2-1.
For the Packers, QB Jordan Love was 22-of-44 for 259 yards with one TD, one INT and a 66.4 passer rating. WR Romeo Doubs, who caught the game-winning TD with 2:56 left, had five receptions for 73 yards, and rookie WR Jayden Reed had three catches for 63 yards. Rookie TE Luke Musgrave had six catches for 49 yards, and rookie WR Dontayvion Wicks had four catchers for 45 yards.
Carr was 11 of 16 for 96 yards with the touchdown. Rookie running back Kendre Miller saw the first action of his career and had seven carries for 24 yards. The Saints had just 131 yards of offense.
The Packers (1-1), who had seven penalties for 60 yards, will get the ball to start the second half. The Saints lost right guard Cesar Ruiz to a concussion. James Hurst moved from left guard to take his spot and Andrus Peat entered the game at left guard.
