The Steelers just needed a trip to Las Vegas to forget about the offensive woes that had troubled them in their first two games.
Only this trip wasn't for rest and relaxation. This was a business trip for the Steelers. And Sunday night, business was good.
Playing before a very pro-Steelers crowd at Allegiant Stadium, the Steelers got two touchdown passes from Kenny Pickett as they defeated the Raiders, 23-18 here Sunday night.
"We did what we needed to do, secure victory," said Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. "Still very early stages of the year. We got a lot to learn. We got a lot to teach. But it's good to do so with the victory."
Defensive end Maxx Crosby is one the best pass-rushers in the league. Crosby has a great plan to get after the quarterback and utilizes his violent hands to get into the backfield. The 26-year-old has registered 38.5 sacks in his career thus far. In Week 1, Crosby had five total tackles and one sack.
Las Vegas also features two athletic linebackers in the middle of the field. Linebacker Robert Spillane plays with great anticipation and awareness. Spillane has sound instincts in the run game and tackles well in space. The Western Michigan product leads the team in total tackles (21) with two tackles for loss and one sack. Linebacker Divine Deablo is an athletic defender at the second level. Deablo quickly diagnoses plays and stays disciplined. The Virginia Tech product is tied for second on the team in total stops (19) and one sack.
After trailing 7-0 in the first quarter, the Steelers scored 23 unanswered points to beat the Raiders, 23-18, at Allegiant Stadium.
Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett played an efficient game. Pickett went 16 of 28 passing for 235 yards and had two touchdown passes.
Pittsburgh got huge contributions from its defense. Cornerback Levi Wallace had two interceptions, veteran cornerback Patrick Peterson had a pick and outside linebacker T.J. Watt had two of the team’s four sacks in the win.
The Raiders burned their second timeout with 2:12 left and on a third and two after Harris picked up eight yards on the ground. Pickett then delivered a clutch first down throw to Allen Robinson for a first down right before the two-minute warning.
The Steelers ran with the clock down to 23 seconds with runs from Warren up the gut before calling timeout and punting. Harvin unleashed a 56-yard punt and DeAndre Carter muffed it along the sideline but recovered it. Still, it was all for naught as Garoppolo was picked off one more time by Wallace and the Steelers knelt out the rest of the clock.
