Premier League Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham all in action

Premier League clubs have reportedly been asked by the Football Association (FA) to provide around UK£25 million (US$31.1 million) to set up an ‘enhanced’ English women’s soccer top flight for the 2024/25 season, but a majority of teams have yet to agree.

While a ‘significant minority’ of Premier League clubs purportedly support the FA’s proposal, the national soccer governing body remains someway short of getting the 14 votes needed to introduce the changes to the WSL.

The FA is also reportedly concerned that it will run out of time to complete the WSL relaunch next season and has set a deadline of December to get the funding in place. Its proposal would see Premier League clubs take ownership of the WSL, although the FA would retain a ‘golden share’, giving the organisation the right of veto over key decisions.

The Premier League’s pursuit of a WSL takeover continues. But, the clubs are said to be divided on whether or not now is the correct moment to officially present the bids.

According to the FA’s plan, the Premier League would be responsible for covering the first investment. While there is widespread dispute among the clubs on whether or not they should all pay and how much they should each put in.

It seems unlikely that the teams will be divided along the same lines as the classic “Big Six” and “other 14” groups. To add more complexity, just half of the EPL’s sides are represented in the WSL, and several of those teams play in lower divisions.

The hosts failed to clear a corner, a goalmouth scramble ensued, and after Tommy Reid saved once and then twice from close range, he was unable to stop Smith from bundling the ball home in the 47th minute.

Shannon Ruth's team were 2-0 down nine minutes later as Ealing was allowed too much time to run at Brighton's defence and he snuck a shot into the corner at Reid's near post.

But Albion showed their fighting spirit as Baker-Boaitey rifled the ball past keeper Filip Marschall from long range just after the hour mark to halve the deficit.
