Portugal, led by manager Roberto Martinez, will aim to tighten their stranglehold on Group J’s top spot as they host a surging Luxembourg team on Monday in their ongoing Euro 2024 qualification campaign. With both teams in solid contention for qualification, this showdown promises high stakes and thrilling action.
Despite missing Cristiano Ronaldo through suspension, Portugal produced a dominant display at Estadio Algarve Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes produced a hat-trick of assists before scoring a late goal himself in the nation's biggest international victory to date.
He twice provided crosses for Goncalo Inacio to find the net with powerful headers and was also involved as Paris Saint-Germain forward Goncalo Ramos helped himself to a first-half double with expert finishes as Robert Martinez's side moved 4-0 clear at the interval.
Portugal were on top from the first whistle, and didn't need long to turn their dominance into something more quantifiable. Bruno Fernandes — fresh off a star performance against Slovakia — provided the spark, sending a teasing ball into the box, perfectly placed for a Goncalo Inacio header.
The second came five minutes later, with Ramos strolling through the Luxembourg defence and firing a shot into the bottom corner. Ramos got his second after 30 minutes, rippling the back of the net from close range after a scamper and cut-back from Rafael Leao. Inacio put things beyond doubt on the stroke of half time, scoring his second of the night with a well-taken header.
Roberto Martinez's side did not let up and, just before the hour, Fernandes found Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who raced clear to fire home a fifth.
Ricardo Horta added a sixth with 20 minutes left before Jota slotted in again. Fernandes then capped his fine individual display with a well-taken goal late on and Joao Felix completed the rout to make it six wins from six.
A beating turned into a rout after the half. Diogo Jota grabbed himself a goal while ubstitute Ricardo Horta rifled one into the roof of the net. Jota, Fernandes, and, finally, Joao Felix rounded out a swaggering win for a side that might just be better without their brightest star.
