With the NFL's deadline for team's to select their 53-man rosters fast approaches, tonight's game between Los Angeles Chargers and New Orleans Saints provides another opportunity for players to impress.
Plenty of players will be assured of a place on their respective rosters, but for others they will need to impress in what is left of preseason to earn a spot.
Here are five players who will be hoping to play their way onto their team's rosters.
Jameis Winston and rookie Jake Haener combined to go 24-38 passing for 278 yards. Neither threw a touchdown or an interception.
The Saints defense played a fantastic game sacking LA quarterbacks five times. Backup defensive end Niko Lalos from Dartmouth College had three sacks in the 4th quarter.
Not only did the teams have to deal with Tropical Strom Hiliary, an earthquake also happened northwest of Los Angeles just before the game.
The Saints only played about half of their starters, but also had former first round picks like Payton Turner and Bryan Bresee on the field. That’s a rather significant upgrade from the defense the Rams put on the field last week. While it’s not cause for massive concern, it does dump cold water on last week’s flowers.
Chargers quarterback Easton Stick played the entire game and had a pair of rushing TDs. Stick's 1-yard TD on a sneak got the Chargers within five points with 3:46 remaining.
After the Chargers (1-1) forced the Saints (2-0) into a three-and-out, Los Angeles drove to the New Orleans 28-yard line, but Lonnie Johnson picked off Stick at the Saints 1 on fourth-and-4 from the 28.
"Pre-snap penalties can't happen, that was a total lack of focus. That has to get cleaned up. You have to look at the tape and determine from a technical standpoint what you could have done better technique wise and put yourself in a better position, specifically on some of the holding calls. From my vantage point, I don't believe they were all holding, but the flag went down. We have to look at it and see what we can do better."
"On that particular play, he's running a little slant-route and the defensive back kind of jammed him. The official explained to me that he thought he really wasn't running a route. We'll look at the technique there, but all of those are teachable moments. That's part of what the preseason is all about."
