Spains World Cup: Olga Carmona Winning World Cup for Spain

Within the span of hours this weekend, Spain’s Women’s World Cup hero Olga Carmona experienced a career high and a deep loss, the latter of which was kept from her so she could focus on Sunday’s final.

Carmona, who scored Spain’s winning goal against England, learned of her father’s death after the game, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said in a statement.

“The RFEF deeply regrets to report the death of Olga Carmona’s father. The soccer player learned the sad news after the World Cup final. We send our most sincere hugs to Olga and her family in a moment of deep pain. We love you, Olga,” RFEF added.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation said in a statement that it regretted "to report the death of Olga Carmona’s father" and that she "learned the sad news after the World Cup final."

"We send our most sincere hugs to Olga and her family in a moment of deep pain," the federation said. "We love you, Olga, you are the history of Spanish football."

Later on Sunday, Olga Carmona  shared on social media that "without knowing it, I had my own star before the game even started."

"I know that you gave me the strength to achieve something unique. I know you have been watching me tonight and you are proud of me. Rest in peace dad."

Carmona's club, Real Madrid, issued a condolence message for their defender.

"Real Madrid, the president and the board of directors are deeply saddened by the passing of the father of our player Olga Carmona. Real Madrid would like to extend our condolences and heartfelt sympathy to Olga, her family and all her loved ones. May he rest in peace," says the club statement.

Carmona also came to Spain's rescue in the semifinal against Sweden on Tuesday, scoring an 89th-minute goal that led the team to a 2-1 win. With Sunday's goal, she became the first player since American Carli Lloyd in 2015 to score in a World Cup semifinal and final.

Carmona played an integral role in Spain’s history-making tournament, playing in all six matches and scoring two crucial goals.

She scored a 90th-minute winner in the semi-finals against Sweden to send Spain into their first World Cup final, and her second won Spain the trophy on Sunday.

The left-back dedicated her World Cup final-winning goal to the mother of her best friend, who had recently passed away.
