The Patriots beat the Packers, 21-17, in a preseason game at Lambeau Field on Saturday night.
The game was suspended, agreed to by both teams, with 10:29 left in the fourth quarter after Patriots CB Isaiah Bolden was strapped to a backboard and carted off the field after an apparent head injury.
The Patriots drove 88 yards in 17 plays, consuming nearly nine minutes on the clock in the third quarter, for a touchdown to take the lead. The Packers were driving back the other way at the quarter change and had reached the New England 25-yard line when the injury occurred.
Bolden laid motionless after colliding with teammate Calvin Munson as they attempted to tackle Packers player Malik Heath early in the fourth quarter at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
“He had feeling in all his extremities, but has been taken to a local hospital for further tests and observation,” the Patriots later said on social media.
Players from both teams gathered as the rookie cornerback was tended to on the field and eventually carted off. Bolden, a seventh-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft, will be held at the hospital overnight, the team said.
On a third-and-7, Bolden was looking to tackle Packers wideout Malik Heath when he took friendly fire from teammate Calvin Munson. Bolden was hit in the head, fell to the ground and did not move afterwards. Bolden was then placed on a stretcher and carted off the field. That was the final play of the game, as both teams agreed to end the contest.
The last time an NFL game was suspended due to injury was when Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest after taking a blow to the chest during a Monday Night Football game against the Cincinnati Bengals this past January.
Hamlin made a full recovery, and saw his first NFL action since the incident in a preseason game last week against the Indianapolis Colts.
An update on Bolden's status will be provided at 8 a.m. ET on Sunday.
Bolden was taken in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft out of Florida State and Jackson State. He had played in 34 total snaps on Saturday night after playing 40 in New England's first preseason game.
