Blackhawks trade: How The Devils Came Out On Top By Trading Taylor Hall

The Chicago Blackhawks acquired forward Taylor Hall and the rights to pending unrestricted free-agent forward Nick Foligno in a trade with the Boston Bruins, the teams announced Monday. Here’s what you need to know:

The Bruins received the rights to restricted free agents Ian Mitchell and Alec Regula in the trade.

The move will shed Hall’s $6 million cap hit for the 2023-24 season.

Hall tallied 16 goals and 36 points in 61 games for the Bruins last season. The 31-year-old, drafted No. 1 by Edmonton in 2010, was dealt to Boston in a trade from Buffalo in April 2021.

Foligno, who had 26 points in 60 games last season, is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July

The Chicago Blackhawks made a splash in the trade market on Monday, two days before they will make a splash at the NHL draft.

The Blackhawks acquired veteran forward Taylor Hall and pending unrestricted free agent forward Nick Foligno from the Boston Bruins in exchange for defensemen Ian Mitchell, 24, and Alec Regula, 22, who are both pending restricted free agents.

"We are thrilled to be adding players of Nick's and Taylor's caliber to our organization," Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson said in a statement. "The two bring a wealth of experience and leadership that will strengthen not only our forward group, but aid in the development of our entire roster."

Boston doesn’t save any cap space by moving Foligno, who was set to hit free agency on Saturday as well.

But flipping him to Chicago does give the Blackhawks an added window to try and work out a contract with the veteran winger. Foligno’s experience and presence in the locker room would likely be welcomed on a young and rebuilding Chicago roster.

Mitchell, 24, is a right-shot defenseman who previously played for Jim Montgomery at the University of Denver. The 5-foot-11 blueliner played in 35 games with Chicago last season, scoring a goal and adding seven assists.

Regula, 22, is another right-shot defenseman who has played in 22 games with the Blackhawks over the last three seasons. The West Bloomfield, Michigan native is a big body at 6-foot-4, 208-pounds.

With Connor Clifton potentially leaving Boston in free agency and more overhaul expected on the left side of the Bruins defense, adding Regula and Mitchell gives Boston cheaper assets who could fill in similar roles with added minutes.

time will tell if last year’s 36-point season was due to his regular season injury, but he will not be forced to showcase himself for a potential midseason acquisition to rejoin a contender and look for his first ring.

But for the time being, the Devils may either be deserving of a line of praises for their foresight in the franchise’s future, or maybe a sigh of relief for everything seeming to work out even better than expected.
