Newcastle United are pushing on multiple forward targets as they look to end the transfer window with a flourish, while Nick Woltemade’s future feels increasingly uncertain after the club fielded several enquiries for the Germany striker.

The Magpies have held talks with Lille over the weekend for long-term target Matias Fernandez-Pardo, who can play across the front line.

As revealed by The i Paper on Friday, he is keen to move to St James’ Park if a deal can be thrashed out but after more than a week of negotiations that has proved tough.

They also like Stuttgart’s Bilal El Khannouss and there are “one or two” alternatives being worked on in the background, although the pool of players Newcastle believe would significantly improve them while worth the fees being demanded is small.

Newcastle have room to strengthen

Insiders have stressed that there remains significant headroom under Uefa’s squad cost rules to sign more players.

But having taken some tough decisions in the close season, they will only recruit those who fit their long-term strategy and enable them to keep strengthening in future windows. “It is a financial balancing act,” one insider admitted.

Sources have suggested that with just under two days until the transfer deadline they remain “very active” and there is still a chance that more than one player arrives to strengthen Matthias Jaissle’s squad.

There are no guarantees, though, and Woltemade’s future falls into that category.

What’s going on with Woltemade?

It is understood that the club are considering letting the forward leave on loan even if they don’t manage to bring in another No 10. Sources say the Magpies are “open-minded” about what happens in the final 48 hours of the transfer window with Woltemade.

Woltemade’s availability has alerted clubs all over Europe, with Juventus, Fiorentina and Napoli among the Serie A sides keen to sign him. Borussia Dortmund have also been mentioned.

The issue around a deal may be what percentage of his wages any club signing him pays in any loan deal as he is one of Newcastle’s top earners.

An option to make it a permanent deal could also be included, with reports in Italy claiming Newcastle now value him around £50m. That would be a substantial loss from the £69m the Magpies paid for him but given the huge profit they have made this summer, it would enable them to strengthen the forward line and bring in players more suited to Jaissle’s high-energy style.

Could Murphy go?

Elsewhere there has also been speculation surrounding Jacob Murphy’s future, although sources at Newcastle have played down talk of a fresh approach from Nottingham Forest ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

While Murphy is in the final year of his contract and is available for transfer, he is also seen as an important member of the squad and his role off-the-field has been invaluable in terms of knitting the squad together at a time of upheaval.

Forest made an approach a fortnight ago and there were talks. A move to the City Ground cannot be ruled out, but it is unlikely that Murphy would go without attacking reinforcements being progressed.
