Controversial influencer and former professional kickboxer Andrew Tate has reportedly been charged with rape and human trafficking offences in Romania, according to U.K. reports.Andrew Tate, the influencer and former professional kickboxer, was indicted on Tuesday in Romania on charges of human trafficking and forming an organized criminal group. His brother, Tristan, and two Romanian women were indicted on other charges in the alleged scheme that involved them recruiting girls from the U.S. and the United Kingdom by claiming they wanted to date them, then forcing them to have sex on camera.
According to prosecutors, the Tates forced seven women to record pornography in a house outside of Bucharest. On two occasions, one of the brothers used “violence and mental coercion” to allegedly rape one of the victims. The indictment does not specify the defendant, though the Washington Post reports that prior court documents state that Andrew Tate was being investigated for rape.
Romania's Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT), has accused the four defendants of forming an organized crime group to carry out human trafficking in Romania, the U.K. and the U.S. It says seven alleged victims were recruited by two defendants and misled about their romantic intentions. The alleged victims were then moved to houses where they were intimidated with acts of physical and mental violence, and sexually exploited, according to DIICOT.
The alleged victims were later taken to buildings in Ilfov county in Romania where they were intimidated, placed under constant surveillance and control and forced into debt, according to a statement from Romanian prosecutors.
The defendants allegedly then forced the women to take part in pornography which was later shared on social media.
One defendant is accused of raping a woman twice in March 2022, the statement adds.
The trial will not start immediately and is expected to take several years.
A Romanian judge now has 60 days to inspect the case files before it can be sent to trial.
The media team for the Tate brothers said: "While this news is undoubtedly predictable, we embrace the opportunity it presents to demonstrate their innocence and vindicate their reputation."
It added that the indictment "allows us to present a comprehensive body of evidence, diligently collected and prepared over time, which will undoubtedly substantiate the brothers' claims of innocence".
There are also separate charges still under investigation which could lead to a separate indictment, including money laundering and trafficking of minors.
In 2016, Andrew Tate, a British-American former kickboxer, was removed from British TV show Big Brother over a video which appeared to show him attacking a woman.
He went on to gain notoriety online, with Twitter banning him for saying women should "bear some responsibility" for being sexually assaulted. He has since been reinstated.
Despite social media bans, he gained popularity, particularly among young men, by promoting what he presented as a hyper-masculine, ultra-luxurious lifestyle.
Prosecutors ordered the confiscation of the Tate brothers' assets, including 15 luxury cars, luxury watches and about $3 million in cryptocurrency, the agency’s statement said.
Several women in Britain also are pursuing civil claims to obtain damages from Tate, alleging they were victims of sexual violence. In a recent interview with the BBC, Tate denied spreading a culture of misogyny and accusations that he manipulated women for financial gain.
