Dear Editor: It’s a shame columnist Kathryn Lopez’s ideas of dignity and compassion don’t extend to empathy for the plight of women whose right to choose whether to give birth or not has been taken from them. In her tear-jerking May 19 column commemorating the life and death of Dr. Michael Brescia, praising his loving care of a terribly ill homeless patient rescued from dying beneath a bridge, Lopez bemoans the lack of care for the mentally ill in the U.S. Certainly a terrible shortcoming in a nation so wealthy, which prides itself on its supposed humanity.
