In Our Opinion: County must retract new ordiance on documents
We agree with the many people, including county officials elsewhere in the state and experts in public sunshine law, who are calling out our county supervisors for enacting a county ordinance hiking the price of getting information out of them. State law allows local authorities to charge the actual cost of reproducing documents when asked although under the law many of these transactions are minimal. The state law does not alow local authorities to charge for staff time. The idea is that the people deserve access to all documents stored at local offices, especially those the local authorities would rather we didn’t see. Now we’re hearing the county is charging thousands of dollars to people
