With less than 30 days until the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, every minute and every step of preparation counts.
“They couldn’t run a mile the first day and now they’re here running ‘a short week’ is what they call it. It’s a 14-mile run,” said Marco Galvan, the executive director of Students Run Chicago. Founded in 2014, the nonprofit connects Chicago high schoolers interested in running with mentors and hands-on training.
SRC also removes financial barriers by covering race entry fees, new shoes if needed, and even transportation to training and races.
For the last 20-plus weeks, runners have been meeting every Saturday morning near Oakwood Beach before sunrise.
“Running is mental. So if you have a support system, you’re more likely to show up,” said Re’gan Townend, who just started college and is running her first marathon next month.
Frankender Acosta, a junior at Benito Juarez High School, never really ran before SRC. He arrived in Chicago three years ago from Venezuela.
“When I came here to U.S., I was alone. No friends or someone to say like I’m going to run with you,” Acosta told NBC 5’s Jenn Schanz.
Now, SRC has become a big part of his Chicago story.
“When I start running, I found a community,” he said.
Acosta is preparing for his second full marathon. Tamisha Roberts, meanwhile, is gearing up for her first.
“I’m pretty nervous, but I’m pretty excited at the same time,” she said.
“Tamisha is one of those students who came in not really know about running, not really accustomed to running,” Galvan told NBC Chicago.
“I didn’t have a lot of confidence when I first started. Because I’m mostly like an art kid who had never joined any kind of sport before,” Tamisha said.
Her next run will be 20 miles – the home stretch of marathon training.
SRC has about 80 students from schools all over the city running in the Chicago Marathon on Oct. 11. Around 50 will take part for the very first time.
“I have to finish whatever I start. And that finish is the marathon,” Tamisha said.
