Long before he built one of the biggest companies in the world, Jeff Bezos was working the breakfast shift at McDonald’s.

In 1980, when he was 16 and a student at Miami Palmetto Senior High School, Bezos took a job as a short-order cook at a McDonald’s in Miami. He worked strictly in the kitchen, never behind the register, and he has said his favorite shift was Saturday morning.

His first week came with a messy welcome. A ketchup dispenser mounted on the wall got stuck open and sprayed ketchup into hard-to-reach corners of the kitchen. As the newest employee, Bezos was handed the cleaning supplies. “Since I was the new guy, they handed me the cleaning solution and said, ‘Get going!’” he recalled, according to Fortune.

Bezos has said the job taught him real skills. He learned how to crack eggs with one hand, and how hard it is to keep up during a rush. He also learned about responsibility. “You can learn responsibility in any job, if you take it seriously,” he said.

After high school, Bezos went to Princeton University, where he studied electrical engineering and computer science. He then worked on Wall Street, before leaving his job in 1994 to start an online bookstore out of a garage in Bellevue, Washington. He called it Amazon.

The company grew into one of the largest retailers in the world, selling almost everything imaginable, from groceries to streaming movies. Bezos stepped down as Amazon’s CEO in 2021 but remains its executive chair, and he also founded the space company Blue Origin.

Today, Bezos is worth about $372 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, making him one of the richest people on the planet.

He hasn’t forgotten where he started. In 2022, Bezos posted a photo of himself eating a McDonald’s burger, a nod to his first job.
