The sketch opened with James Austin Johnson as President Donald Trump, reflecting on Tuesday’s midterm elections, in which Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate. Johnson’s Trump grumbled about the results and rattled off his nicknames for some of the winners.
“Election is over now, so I hope you enjoy what you voted for,” he said, before running through a list that included Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff and Michigan’s Abdul El-Sayed. “And, of course, down in Texas, ‘Talafreako.’”
That’s when the real James Talarico, who won Texas’ Senate race just days earlier, stepped into the sketch.
“That’s ‘Senator Talafreako,’” he said, as the studio audience broke into loud applause.
Talarico, a former state representative and schoolteacher, defeated Republican Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Nov. 3, becoming the first Democrat elected to the U.S. Senate from Texas since 1988, according to Rolling Stone.
On SNL, he poked fun at his campaign’s fundraising. “Hi America, I’m James Talarico, the guy who’s been texting you every day asking for $5,” he joked.
“In this economy,” Johnson’s Trump shot back, “who can blame you.”
Talarico then pivoted to a message about working together, before turning the joke on SNL itself.
“It’s clear people want something new. They want something different,” he said. “I’m talking, of course, about SNL’s cold opens.”
“How many of these Trump freezers are they going to do?” he asked.
“Infinity,” Johnson’s Trump replied.
The two then closed the sketch together with the show’s famous line: “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!”
Talarico’s cameo continues a long SNL tradition of politicians stopping by the show, especially around elections. Johnson has played Trump on the show since 2022, and Trump-themed cold opens have been a regular feature of the current season.
