A skydiver from a western suburb of Chicago died on Friday after a mid-air collision with another licensed skydiver at an event in California, authorities said.
Levi Pimentel, a 29-year-old woman from Aurora, Illinois, and Georgia Jean, a 56-year-old woman from Box Elder, South Dakota, were identified by authorities in Lake Elsinore, California, on Saturday as the two skydivers who died after their parachutes became entangled. Both were licensed skydivers.
The deadly incident occurred around noon on Friday at Skydive Elsinore, the company said in a statement. The free fall portion of the dive and the opening of the parachutes went according to plan, but as they were preparing to land, the two skydivers collided at approximately 150 feet above the ground and their parachutes became “entangled,” the company said.
They “both both sustained critical injuries when they reached the ground,” Skydive Elsinore said in a statement. They were pronounced dead at the hospital.
Pimentel was listed on LinkedIn as a lead instructor at iFLY Naperville, an indoor skydiving company.
The Federal Aviation Administration was notified and will collect the skydivers’ parachutes and conduct an investigation, the sheriff’s office said.
iFly Naperville did not immediately respond to NBC Chicago’s inquiry.
