Danielle Fishel has had enough of what she thinks is a double standard at Dancing with the Stars.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the Boy Meets World alum, who was eliminated during Week 8 of Season 34, had two-time Mirrorball Trophy winner Kym Johnson on a recent episode of her “Ballroom Breakdown” podcast to discuss the season’s Horror Movie Night.
The Oct. 27 DWTS episode saw Shirley Ballas, a Latin dance legend who serves as a judge on the UK’s Strictly Come Dancing, join the judges’ panel, and she didn’t hold back. She handed out a slew of low scores, giving Julia Stiles and Tatyana Ali a pair of 4s and Bachelorette alum Tyler Cameron a 5.
“I was surprised that Shirley did give him a five because I thought the girls were better than that,” Johnson admitted.
Fishel agreed. “I also thought that a 5 was generous when she had given Tatyana and Julia a 4. I thought, ‘There’s no way that this dance was better than what we had seen. And so, if you were going to give the ladies 4s, I feel like this was worthy of a 4 as well,” she said.
The actress then explained that Ballas’ scoring hints at a bigger issue with DWTS.
“I do believe that the judges, all of them, have a tendency to be harder on the women than they are on the male celebs,” Fishel explained. “It could be wrong. But, in my opinion, I think sometimes the men get a pass that the women don’t get.”
The 45-year-old isn’t the first to share such criticisms. Pop Culture Data found that DWTS judges, including Carrie Ann Inaba, are kinder to male celebrities than their female counterparts, prompting backlash. Last year, Inaba told Variety their findings are “partly true,” but Fishel thinks she’s also affected by this double standard.
“That same can be said for the audience at home, watching the judges,” she said. “The men get away with being able to give a constructive criticism here or there, whereas the women judges, Carrie Ann and the guest judges, they get booed.”
Johnson quickly chimed in, “true!”, before Fishel added, “So in general, I think we see a little bit of unfairness with how women are treated in multiple different ways on the show.”
