Paul Howard, son of The Three Stooges member Moe Howard and a central force in preserving the legacy of the beloved American comedy troupe, has died. He was 91.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a spokesperson for C3 Entertainment, which owns The Three Stooges license and brand, confirmed Paul died earlier this week. He was the last surviving son of the comedy troupe, which consisted of Moe, his brothers Curly and Shemp, and Larry Fine.
After his father’s death in 1975, Paul faithfully served Stooges fans, connecting with them at conventions and events over the last five decades. He offered an inside look at the stories and memories behind his dad and uncles’ personal and professional lives.
In 2015, Paul hosted the docuseries Hey Moe, Hey Dad!, which explored the Stooges’ legacy across nine episodes featuring archival footage, family accounts and interviews with those close to Moe and the comedy troupe, Variety reported. Produced and distributed by C3 Entertainment, the series also included interviews with celebrity Stooges fans, including Whoopi Goldberg, Billy West and Leonard Maltin. Paul’s niece, Tessa Maurer, shared an excerpt from his sister Joan Howard Maurer’s book Growing Up Stooge about his birth.
“Dad [Moe] always wanted a son; someone he could take fishing and with whom he could play baseball. In late 1934, after Mother informed him that she was pregnant, he quipped, ‘Honey, if it’s a boy, they’ll have to drag me out of the gutter, I’ll be so drunk,” she wrote.
She continued, “Mother timed Paul’s birth to a vaudeville tour in the east so she could give birth to Paul at Doctor’s Hospital in New York. … On July 8, 1935, eight years after I was born, Dad’s dream became a reality when my brother Paul was born.”
Paul was a longtime New Yorker, living in Rifton, New York, for more than 40 years before relocating to Manhattan, The Hollywood Reporter reported. He is survived by his wife, daughter, nephew and cousin Janie Howard Hanky, Curly’s daughter.
