Penélope Cruz is opening up about her private family life in Madrid with Javier Bardem and their children.
According to E! Online, in a recent interview with The Perfect Magazine, The Invite star shared that she and Bardem chose to live in Spain with their kids—Leo, 15 and Luna, 12—because it’s “easier” to keep their family life private than it would be in the U.S.
“All our families are there,” Cruz explained, “and the friends from childhood and from our teenage years; it’s easier to have a normal life, you know?”
She continued, “You have to make an effort to keep a part of your life private. But I think when you have children, it’s really important. And they deserve that, they completely deserve that. Later they can decide what they want to do in terms of their work and everything. But they need to have that freedom and not be exposed to things when they are little.”
Cruz and Bardem met while filming Jamón Jamón in 1992 and began dating after co-starring in the 2008 film Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Hello! reported. The couple married in 2010 and welcomed Leo in 2011 and Luna in 2013. That same year, they moved their family to Madrid.
But living in Madrid isn’t the only way Cruz and Bardem look out for their children. Earlier this year, the Cape Fear actor told Variety the one thing he requests when he’s on set.
“I don’t have musts in my contract that have to do with bigger trailers or luxurious suites,” he told the outlet in May. “The only thing I do pay attention to is, no more than two weeks away from my family.”
Cruz and Bardem are set to reunite on screen for Bunker, a psychological thriller about an architect whose marriage is strained when he agrees to build a bunker for a millionaire. The film premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in September.
