Grandfather, retired restaurant owner killed in 2021 honored with Chinatown street renaming ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

A beloved grandfather randomly gunned down in broad daylight in Chicago’s Chinatown was honored and remembered on Friday. Family of Woom Sing Tse gathered for a special tribute and dedication.

His murder several years ago sparked fear in Chinatown. Now, with his killer sentenced, the city is honoring Tse, his contributions and his lasting impact on the community by renaming a street in his memory.

His family called the moment bittersweet as they came together for the street renaming ceremony in his honor.

“We’re so thankful and grateful this community has meant so much to my dad and to our family. So, to be able to have his name be part of this community is very important,” said Susan Lam, his daughter.

Tse’s family lives blocks away from Cermak Road and Princeton Avenue, where they say his legacy will live and carry on forever.

“It’s something we’ll never forget, we’ll always remember, symbolic of what a great person he was,” said William Tse, his son. “He will be in our hearts forever.”

The 71-year-old was randomly targeted while walking near Haines Elementary School in December 2021. Prosecutors said the gunman shot him more than 25 times in cold blood. Since his murder, residents have pushed for more protection, including security cameras, lighting and increased patrols.

“Chinatown is one of the close-knit communities, so whenever anything happens people are much more aware, but I think we overall, the 9th District has been doing a good job of patrols, and the residents and the watch group have been doing a great job watching out for each other,” said Grace Chan McKibben, executive director of the Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community.

Family said Tse immigrated from China with nothing but hopes of the American dream. He built a career as a cook and restaurant owner in Chinatown and was a familiar face as the head of the Ping Pong Association.

“A very kindhearted, good person to say the least,” his son said. “My father did a lot not for himself but for the family and everyone else around him.”

“I just think that his life mattered not just to us, but to everyone in this community who knows him and loves him and misses him as well,” his daughter added.

As they celebrate his legacy, his family leans on the community’s support and knows justice will come to other families who are still waiting.

“This is our community that no one can take that from us,” Lam said. “Keep fighting, be grateful for the community who’s fighting with you.”
