The guardsmen made the trip to Spain believing they were there simply to watch the game from the stands. They had no idea their families had also flown to Madrid to greet them—and Parade has a sneak peek of the heartwarming moment it all unfolded during practice.

The three service members were taking in drills from the sideline when Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski walked over to chat. “I’ve got one more big surprise for you,” the coach told the group before turning toward the field and asking, “Who are these people?”

Right on cue, their families ran out onto the grass to surprise them. Tears and tight hugs immediately broke out across the sideline as days and distance melted away on the turf.

The surprise brought an end to months of physical separation for each of the deployed soldiers. Sgt. 1st Class Richard Logan had been deployed and away from his family since May. His wife and sister ran out onto the field to surprise him.

Staff Sgt. Nuvia Vergara had been deployed away from her home and loved ones since Sept. 30. Her 7-year-old son and his godmother made the overseas journey to surprise her on the sideline.More: See 25 Stars Boosting Morale for Troops Through the Years

Chief Warrant Officer 3 Richard “Nate” Wilson had also been deployed since Sept. 30. He was greeted by his wife and 7-year-old son. Traveling to Spain was an extra milestone for Wilson’s young son, marking the first time in his life that he had ever flown on an airplane.

After the tearful reunions, the coach checked back in with the soldiers.

“Did I get you?” the coach asked.

“You win,” Logan replied.

The coach shook hands with the service members and spent time chatting with the families before gathering the Falcons squad together to break the team down at the end of practice. Surrounding the guardsmen on the field, everyone put their fists in and chanted “Army” on three.

The Falcons and Bengals are scheduled to play Sunday, Nov. 8, at Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. local time.
