For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Ava Jochims from Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, has announced her verbal commitment to Stanford University for 2027-2028. She wrote on Swimcloud:
“I wanted to wait until everything was OFFICIAL … so excited to announce that I’ll be continuing my academic and athletic career at Stanford University! Thanks to my family, coaches, teachers, teammates, and friends for their support. Your belief in me has been invaluable! Special shout out to Racer X Aquatics for the past 8 years. Work never stops! Thank you Coach Chris, Coach Annie, and Coach Marcus for this amazing opportunity! Going to miss this Pittsburgh snow, but I can’t wait for the next 4 years with outdoor pools! GO CARD!!!”
Jochims is a senior at Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh. She does her year-round swimming with Racer X Aquatics and specializes in IM, free, and breast. We considered her a “Best of the Rest” recruit on our list of top girls’ swimming recruits from the class of 2027 after their junior year of high school.
After a particularly successful long course season in the summer of 2025 –in which she finaled in the 200 breast (21st), 200 fly (17th), 200 IM (13th), and 400 IM (10th) at Junior Nationals, with PBs of 2:15.26 in the 200 fly and 2:17.93/ 4:50.78 in the IMs– Jochims hit the ground running last fall. She earned best times in the 200 fly (2:00.41) and 400 IM (4:14.19) at the PEAQ Halloween Invite, and in the 100 IM at NBAC’s Thanksgiving Meet. At 2025 Winter Juniors East, she lowered her 400 IM time to 4:13.89, placing 11th. She also scored points in the 1000 free (16th place) and 200 breast (11th), coming within a few tenths of her best times in both the 100 and 200 breast.
Jochims won the 200 IM (2:01.13) and 500 free (4:53.93) at the 2026 PIAA Girls’ 2A State Championships, repeating both state titles from her sophomore season (2:00.49/4:50.75).
This past summer, she came very close to her PBs from 2025. First at Richmond Sectionals, where she was runner-up in the 100 breast and 200/400 IM and placed 10th in the 800 free and 13th in the 200 free, and then at Summer Juniors, where she competed in the 50/100/200 breast, 200 fly, and 200/400 IM.
Jochims will head to Palo Alto in the fall of 2027 with future Cardinal classmates #9 Ines Arnall, G-17 Carolin He, and “BOTR” commits Bree Smith and Izzy Riva. Her best 400 IM time would have scored in the ‘C’ final at last year’s ACC Championships; it took 1:59.35 in the 200 IM, 2:12.74 in the 200 breast, and 1:46.88/4:46.29 in mid-distance free events to make it back to finals.
Best SCY times:
200 IM – 2:00.09 400 IM – 4:13.80 100 free – 51.06 200 free – 1:49.94 500 free – 4:50.44 1650 free – 16:29.24 100 breast – 1:03.00 200 breast – 2:13.12 200 fly – 2:00.41 View this post on Instagram
