For the first time this season, the Denver Broncos officially sit atop the AFC West. It’s hard to imagine a more exciting game than how Sunday’s showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs played out. Once again, Denver proved it belongs among the NFL’s legitimate contenders, regardless of what the doubters have to say.
Pro Football Focus (PFF) has released its Week 8 player grades, offering a closer look at Denver’s best and worst individual performances from the win.
Offense
Best
WR Jaylen Waddle: 76.9 C Luke Wattenberg: 74.8 OL Alex Palczewski: 74.4 WR Lil’Jordan Humphrey: 72.7 G Ben Powers: 72.5There was plenty of waddling occurring on Sunday, as Waddle hauled in a touchdown and converted a crucial two-point attempt. According to Next Gen Stats, Waddle accounted for 55.47% of the Broncos’ total air yards. That’s an encouraging sign of potential increased involvement, especially after the injury scare he dealt with the previous week.
Worst
TE Evan Engram: 47.3 WR Troy Franklin: 47.4 WR Marvin Mims Jr.: 51.1 TE Adam Trautman: 54.2 QB Bo Nix: 54.5The legend of Nix continues to grow. Despite consistently receiving lower grades from PFF, he keeps making the big plays when it matters most. Underreported: he hasn’t thrown an interception since Week 3. His statistical numbers may not jump off the page, but protecting the football keeps Denver in games and gives Nix a chance to pull out wins late.
Defense
Best
CB Riley Moss: 81.1 DL Sai’vion Jones: 79.0 CB Ja’Quan McMillian: 76.4 CB Pat Surtain II: 74.5 OLB Que Robinson: 74.4 S JL Skinner: 74.4Skinner was the unlikely hero, stopping Kenneth Walker at the 1-yard line with just five seconds remaining to seal the win. Before this week, Skinner had played just two defensive snaps all season and logged only nine against the Chiefs. Talk about making the most of an opportunity.
Worst
CB Jahdae Barron: 30.7 S Taylor Rapp: 35.8 LB Justin Strnad: 37.5 OLB Nik Bonitto: 48.2 DL Eyioma Uwazurike: 49.0Rapp was heavily dinged for his missed tackle on Emmett Johnson. In a one-on-one situation, he failed to make the open-field stop, allowing Johnson to cut back inside and take it in for a touchdown. Rapp has seen a significant increase in playing time following injuries to both Talanoa Hufanga and Brandon Jones. It’s worth mentioning that he did record four total tackles on the day, though.
Special Teams
ST Nate Adkins: 90.2 LS Mitchell Fraboni: 64.5 KR Marvin Mims Jr.: 63.5 P Jeremy Crawshaw: 60.6 K Wil Lutz: 67.2 (FG) 60.0 (KO)Against the Chiefs, Lutz set the NFL record for the longest streak of made PATs.
The Broncos will look to maintain their newly acquired top spot on Sunday. Kickoff is this Sunday at 11:00 am MST.
