Eric Dane recalled a tense moment with Josh Duhamel on the set of Las Vegas, revealing in his posthumous memoir that a staged fight scene nearly turned into a real confrontation.
Talking about the incident in his posthumous memoir, My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments, the late actor revealed that he and Duhamel were about to shoot a scene when Dane told his co-star not to grab him by his tie because he had a herniated disc in his neck. However, things got pretty heated up once the cameras started rolling.
He wrote (via Entertainment Weekly), “We’re about to film a fight scene. I ask the lead, Josh Duhamel, to please not grab me by the tie during the scene. He promises me he won’t.”
Dane said Duhamel agreed, but pulled the tie during the first take and it went right through his neck. However, the same thing happened again on the second take and that’s when Dane turned to the producer and told him to talk to his co-star.
Dane added, “Fire rips through my neck. You better rein in your boy.”
The Transformers star apologized again and said he’d “got caught up in the moment” according to Dane. On the third attempt when the cameras were rolling though, Duhamel grabbed his tie once again and this time, Dane didn’t shy away from giving a reply.
Dane then took off his jacket, and charged toward him with his fists clenched, while the cameras continued recording. He added, “And son of a bi—h, he grabs my f–king tie again, I whip off my suit coat and I say, ‘Let’s go, you p—y-a— actor.'”
The incident occurred in 2004 when Dane was on the show Las Vegas as Leo Broder in season 2. Duhamel was playing Danny McCoy, a Marine who’d been in Iraq and was going through some post-trauma issues. Dane’s memoir states that the crew subsequently told him that his behavior in those early days had really unsettled them.
The late actor also looked at his own response and admitted he should have walked away rather than go further. He apologized to Duhamel in the book and had a good relationship afterwards.
My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments was released by The Open Field, an imprint of Penguin Random House, on November 3. The 272-page book is organized around significant days in Dane’s life, from his early years in Hollywood and struggles with addiction to sobriety, family and his ALS diagnosis.
Dane, best known for playing Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy and Cal Jacobs on Euphoria, wrote the memoir for readers, including his daughters, as a reflection on the experiences that shaped him. He died in February 2026 at the age of 53.
