Democrat challenger Richard Ojeda is projected to unseat incumbent Republican Richard Hudson and win election to the U.S. House of Representatives in North Carolina’s 9th district.
With 116 of 169 total precincts reporting, Ojeda earned 51.40% of the vote compared to Hudson’s 48.60%. Hudson had served in the U.S. House since 2013, initially representing North Carolina’s 8th district before the redrawing of districts moved him to the 9th in 2023. Ojeda’s win represents a flip for the Democrats in the House.
Ojeda is a retired U.S. Army major who formerly served in the state senate in West Virginia. After he moved back to North Carolina, where he had spent several years while serving in the Army, Ojeda said he was inspired to run for office again because of the state of veteran affairs under President Donald Trump’s administration. Ojeda spent time in Fort Bragg near Fayetteville, and with 13 of 28 Cumberland County precincts reporting, Ojeda carried 78.7% of the vote in that county.
The 9th district encompasses Alamance, Hoke, Moore and Randolph counties as well as portions of Chatham, Cumberland and Guilford.
