Chris Pappas has made history.
The New Hampshire Democrat defeated Republican former Senator John E. Sununu in the state’s U.S. Senate race on Tuesday, November 3, becoming the first openly gay man elected to the chamber.
Pappas, 46, will succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, who announced she would not seek reelection. His victory also keeps the Senate seat in Democratic hands.
The win marks a significant milestone for LGBTQ+ representation in Washington, D.C. While openly LGBTQ+ women have previously served in the Senate, Pappas is the first openly gay man elected to the upper chamber.
Pappas was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2018, making him New Hampshire’s first openly LGBTQ+ member of Congress. He has represented the state’s 1st Congressional District since 2019.
Before entering national politics, Pappas was involved in his family’s restaurant business, the Puritan Backroom, a longtime Manchester, New Hampshire, establishment. He also served on the state’s Executive Council.
A graduate of Harvard University, Pappas has made LGBTQ+ equality part of his legislative record, supporting measures including the Equality Act and legislation aimed at prohibiting the so-called gay and transgender panic defense.
In a 2025 interview with The Advocate, Pappas reflected on the possibility of making history with his Senate campaign.
“To me, I’ve never sought to make history,” he said at the time. “That’s just happened along the way while I’ve tried to be of use to people in New Hampshire through public service.”
