Steve Maynor Wins Election to Full Term as Chatham County Sheriff ...Middle East

News by : (chapelboro) -

Steve Maynor, who was appointed as Chatham County Sheriff by the outgoing Mike Roberson in August, is projected to win a full term in the office.

Maynor, a Democrat, defeated challengers Marcus Globuschutz, a Republican, and independent write-in candidate Bruce Coble by winning 76.4% of the vote with 100% precincts reporting on Tuesday night.

Maynor is a longtime veteran of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, having served there for more than two decades. He was appointed as the office’s chief deputy in March 2023 and also served as captain of Special Operations — overseeing court services, narcotics, community services and Student Resource Officers. Prior to that, he worked in the Pittsboro Police Department.

Roberson, who had served as Chatham County Sheriff since 2016, announced his intention to leave the office after winning the Democratic primary for District 3 of the county’s Board of Commissioners in March. The elected commissioner in the seat, David Delaney, had previously said he would not seek another term before resigning in May ahead of a move out of the county — leading the remaining commissioners to unanimously appoint Roberson to fill the seat. He ran unopposed in Tuesday’s general election for the seat’s full term.

The outgoing sheriff endorsed Maynor as his successor against Globuschutz, a Randolph County parole officer. Coble, who is a retired deputy from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office, ran as an independent candidate and failed to collect enough verified signatures to earn an unaffiliated spot on the ballot — but earned enough to qualify as a certified write-in candidate.

In his speech after being sworn in in August, Maynor promised to “enforce the law fairly” and “protect the constitutional rights of every person.”

“We don’t change a community overnight,” he added. “We change it with one conversation, one act of kindness, one encounter at a time. We don’t build trust in one day. We teach, we encourage, we learn and we grow. And we keep showing up, and that’s what we’re going to continue to do.”
