Alan Jackson’s final Nashville concert was already a star-studded sendoff. But when the country legend’s farewell makes its way to television in December, fans will get to relive a special moment featuring another icon: George Strait.
The two country superstars joined forces during Jackson’s June 27 concert at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium for performances of “Designated Drinker” and “Murder on Music Row.”
Both duets will be included in the upcoming NBC special, Alan Jackson: The Last Show, airing Tuesday, Dec. 8, from 8 to 10 p.m. ET/PT. The special will stream on Peacock the following day.
The songs have a history of their own. Jackson, 68, and Strait, 74, recorded “Murder on Music Row” together in 2000, a pointed traditional-country anthem that pushed back against the genre’s increasingly pop-oriented sound.
“Designated Drinker,” meanwhile, appeared on Jackson’s 2002 album Drive and features Strait on the original recording.
Their reunion was one of the memorable moments from the June concert, which drew more than 80,000 fans as Jackson wrapped up his decades-long touring career. According to Jackson’s official account of the night, Strait joined him onstage as the crowd erupted. The pair even raised their glasses before launching into the two songs.
The farewell special will feature plenty more country star power. Performers and guests include Luke Bryan, Eric Church, Luke Combs, Miranda Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Lainey Wilson, Thomas Rhett, Riley Green, Little Big Town and others. Jackson is also expected to perform career-spanning hits such as “Chattahoochee,” “Gone Country,” “Remember When” and “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere.”
Fans who want to revisit the entire concert will also have another way to do so. The 25-song live album, The Last Show: One More for the Road – The Finale (Live from Nashville), is set for release Dec. 4, just days before the NBC broadcast. The album includes both Strait duets, along with Jackson classics spanning his career.
