The Bears, man. The addition of Jeffrey Simmons is immediately, obviously enormous. But the offense is relentless in a way that definitely makes you think about certain possibilities and other things I won’t say aloud. Just go out and add a corner, Ryan Poles, please and thanks, and that should give me plenty of sports to enjoy for a big chunk of the MLB lockout …
Pete Crow-Armstrong is the Chicago Cubs’ only awards finalist, joining Shohei Ohtani and Bryce Turang(?) as the three in the mix for the NL MVP. I’d think Jacob Misiorowski would’ve been more deserving of the finalist spot there, but I know many voters just won’t go there for a pitcher who can otherwise win the Cy Young. My guess is, when the final accounting comes out next week, Turang will be third, but a cluster of other guys will be very close in down-the-ballot votes (including likely Alex Bregman). Speaking of the NL MVP: if Pete Crow-Armstrong is not the UNANIMOUS winner, there should be a whole lot of shame to go around. I’m still bitter about Kris Bryant missing out by one vote in 2016. (Fun fact: Bryant was worth 7.5 WAR that year, while PCA was worth 10.6 this year. It was just an utterly gargantuan season for PCA.) I think there’s actually a decent argument to be made for Craig Counsell as one of the three NL Manager of the Year finalists given the outrageous rash of injuries he had to navigate on the pitching side (and still reach 89 wins), but I understand why he’s not. If your team feels like it disappointed overall, the manager just won’t get much credit on these things. Some year, it’d be nice to have a Cubs reliever show up on a finalists list. I think Daniel Palencia does have that potential in him, and maybe with a more typical Spring Training this time around, he can really break out. *taps ear* I’m being told that Spring Training may not, in fact be typical this year … Crazy court case underway (and it’s wild that this even has reached trial):Of note today: — Potential MLB witnesses include Guardians GM, Mike Chernoff, PC Carl Willis, catchers Austin Hedges, Bo Naylor & Mike Zunino, among others. — Jury selection will continue into tomorrow. Two potential jurors acknowledged betting on Guardians games previously,
— Sam Blum (@SamBlum3) November 2, 2026 Can you imagine some of the questions for the catchers? “So, when Clase kept burying his first-pitch cutters in the dirt, did you think that was weird? Did it make you want to call something else? Did his reaction seem genuine?” Mark Walter has said he won’t sell the Dodgers “no matter what,” but he’d previously said that selling his stake in the Cadillac Formula One team was also not under consideration and now that’s happening:Mark Walter says he won’t sell the Dodgers, but his plans keep changing t.co/1RezLKLjEz
— Bill Shaikin (@BillShaikin) November 3, 2026 Walter has already sold the Lakers and his stake in Chelsea FC, all thanks to an investigation into his insurance companies and their questionable capitalization. The Dodgers may be his jewel, but I’m increasingly wondering if his public positioning is designed to (1) ensure that any offers that come will be, like the Lakers offer was, super over the top, and (2) forestall serious considerations of a sale until after the lockout and the possibility of a salary cap system (which would cause the Dodgers’ already considerable value to explode). In other words, the Dodgers “are not for sale” … unless you’re willing to offer a price right now that ALREADY contemplates a cap system in place. Note, though, that the Padres and Angels recent price tags did represent enormous growth in franchise equity, and are at least partly pricing in the possibility of a cap.
