Alabama women’s basketball showed out on both sides of the ball in a commanding 92-56 win over Queens University of Charlotte to open the season.
It was over midway through the first quarter before the Crimson Tide took its first lead, but the team didn’t look back from there in Pauline Love’s first win as head coach.
The Crimson Tide’s defense made nothing easy for the Royals to start the game. Alabama forced five turnovers in the first quarter and held Queens to 10 points on 3-of-15 shooting.
In the first half, Alabama held Queens to only 10 points in the paint and 1-of-8 shooting from three-point range en route to a 47-20 lead at halftime.
The Queens Royals scored no fast-break points in that half and were 5-of-13 on layups. Alabama forced 11 turnovers, and Queens finished the half with a higher turnover percentage than scoring percentage.
The Crimson Tide’s defense wasn’t quite as suffocating the rest of the way, but Alabama turned Queens over 19 times and scored 19 points off turnovers on the night. The Crimson Tide’s ability to get takeaways was instrumental in preventing the Royals from finding an offensive rhythm.
“In order to get some action going on the offensive end we had to get some defensive stops,” Love said.
Alabama gave up very few perimeter shots throughout the game, holding Queens to seven made threes on the night. The Crimson Tide also dominated the boards throughout the game, finishing with 54 total rebounds while limiting Queens to 37.
Alabama managed to turn 15 offensive rebounds into 21 second-chance points in a dominant display of physicality on the glass.
“We’re going to be the smallest team in the SEC,” Love said. “Those second-chance points are going to mean a lot to us, so we’ve got to be able to create those moments.”
Everybody got their turn on offense for Alabama, with 10 players scoring points in the first half and five reaching double figures on the night. The Crimson Tide especially found success on the interior, scoring 22 points in the paint and 13 points on free throws in the first half.
Alabama finished with 63 combined points off free throws and shots in the paint. Although the Crimson Tide struggled with finishing layups early in the game, the team displayed its ability to feed the ball to the paint and finish through contact as the night went on.
Cincinnati transfer forward Kylie Torrence especially stood out in her first game with Alabama. She put up 16 points and nine rebounds and was one of the Crimson Tide’s greatest forces on the interior.
Sophomore guard Ace Austin was the offensive engine, and she finished with 15 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Sophomore guard Amirah Anderson, who transferred from Boston College, put up 14 points and five rebounds while shooting 3-of-7 from behind the arc.
The Crimson Tide will be a tough opponent if it continues to get offensive production out of all its players and dominate the paint on defense.
“They’re a fun group,” Love said. “They want to be able to make this community proud.”
Alabama has a quick turnaround, facing off against New Orleans on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. CT. The game can be seen on SEC Network+.
