Chicago Cubs Signing a New Deal with Reliever Jacob Webb ...Middle East

The Chicago Cubs have resolved reliever Jacob Webb’s option decision with a new deal. He gets his money and the Cubs get another year of team control.

Right-handed reliever Jacob Webb and the Chicago Cubs are in agreement on a new one-year, $2 million contract that includes a $4 million club option for 2028 ($500K buyout), according to a source familiar with the deal.

So for Webb, it’s still a guarantee of $2.5 million – that’s what he would’ve received on the option – but now it comes in the form of $2 million in salary, and at least a $500K buyout next year. If not that, the Cubs get to keep him for another $4 million. So if he does well, the Cubs just got him essentially on a two-year, $6 million deal. If he struggles next year, the Cubs are out $2.5 million … which would’ve been the case anyway if they’d picked up the option. Pretty sweet deal for them, and a little certainty for Webb instead of an uncertain free agency.

On the one hand, I want to believe Webb would’ve done better in free agency, but the market has multiple times demonstrated it is rather unimpressed with his good results over the last five years (hence the Cubs getting him on such a cheap deal WITH a club option last year in the first place). Maybe he would have once again found offers lacking?

Webb’s year with the Cubs was uneven to say the least. The final accounting was strong (3.36 ERA, 25.7% K, 8.8% BB, 40.8% GB, 7.6% barrel), but it came in three distinct segments. Things were a little tough for the first month, and then Webb was all-universe for the next three and a half, eventually becoming the team’s closer (and at times, only effective reliever). Then things got really tough again for the final month and a half, and we know about the many blown games. Ridden too hard in the summer when the Cubs needed him most, perhaps.

That said, it was clear that Webb had the stuff to be an effective reliever – believe it or not, his 73.7% contact rate in the zone was best in baseball, solid ahead of Mason Miller in the number two spot! – and he even added a mph to his fastball with the Cubs. I’m very glad he’s returning, and that the Cubs now have the potential to retain him for another year thereafter.
