Reunion Time? Bills Cut Ex-Bear C.J. Gardner-Johnson ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

For all the chatter about reunion possibilities via potential trades for Khalil Mack and Nahshon Wright, there is one familiar face the Chicago Bears could bring back who just hit the market. And to make it happen, all it’ll cost is cash considerations. No trade compensation needed, just money.

So … are you interested in running it back with C.J. Gardner-Johnson?

If you are, then you might be happy to know the Buffalo Bills announced his release on Tuesday afternoon.

The Gardner-Johnson cut came one week after he served a one-game suspension for spitting in the direction of Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers. The incident essentially marked the beginning of the end of CJGJ’s time in Buffalo. Gardner-Johnson’s stint with the Bills ends with him having recorded 26 tackles, two pass breakups, and one interception in six games. Pro Football Focus ranked him 71st among the 98 safeties who qualify for the site’s leaderboard. Between a 55.2 overall grade and a recent suspension, I could understand why Bears fans would shy away from bringing him back. But because Gardner-Johnson was so good during his time with the Bears last year, I’d be open to a reunion.

A quick reminder of what C.J. Gardner-Johnson brought to the Bears from this piece I wrote after he signed with the Buffalo Bills:

C.J. Gardner-Johnson came up with a pair of interceptions, three sacks, five tackles-for-loss, and five quarterback hits in the 10 games (seven starts) he played in Chicago. Gardner-Johnson was all over the stat sheet while seemingly playing everywhere on the defense. The 2025 season saw CJGJ line up as a slot cornerback (390 snaps), in the box (269), at free safety (86), and even as a boundary corner (14) on rare occasions. That type of versatility proved to be vital for a Bears defense that had injuries in the secondary throughout the year. And for that, I will always be thankful (as a Bears fan) for his contributions.

I think Gardner-Johnson’s days as a primary cornerback are done. However, that doesn’t mean he can’t be a useful piece on the defense. At this stage of his career, CJGJ seems to be better deployed in a hybrid role. Box safety on one snap. Free safety on another. Linebacker. Blitzer. A real agent of chaos. Given the whispers about the Bears looking for help in the secondary via the trade market, maybe it makes sense to turn to an old friend who just hit free agency. For what it’s worth, he seemed interested in a return during the offseason. And while I won’t bang the table for one, I’m not opposed to it. Stay tuned.
